Looking for Modern French Furntiure- Look Out for Jacques Adnet’s Work

 

Jacques Adnet is a very popular French Art deco Modernist designer who was a well recognized and appreciated young designers and had a vision to design furniture way beyond his era. He was very capable of designing some of the modernized furniture and mirrors and also had the right knowledge of designing apartments and offices for a number of clients. He was the first person to integrate glass and metal and create luxurious and modern looking mirrors. He was also well known for his interior designing as well as furniture designs. One of the other popular art work for which Jacques Adnet was very famous is the leather furniture designs.  

Jacques Adnet was born in the year 1900 near Bourgogne in France. He had a passion for designing things right from his childhood. He educated at the Municipal School of Design in Auxerre and the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs. This is where he studied furniture designing and no one would have imagined then that this studious student would go on to become one of the most popular art deco modernist designers of the world someday. As soon as he finished his graduation in architecture, he joined his twin brother Jean and both of them together set up the J.J. Adnet. Jacques was with his brother Jean until the age of 28. During the course of his work at J.J. Adnet, Jacques Adnet was recognized as one of the most promising young designers of 1925 Salon D'Automne and Les Expositions des Arts Decoratifs. In 1928 he became the director of a well known architecture and design firm La Compagnie des Arts Francais. He was the director of that company till 1960 and had Francois Jourdain, Georges Jouve and Charlotte Perriand as his team of decorators. From 1947 to 1949, Jacques Adnet also presided over the Salon des Artistes Decorateurs. It was during his directorship at La Compagnie des Arts Francais that he started to promote modernist designs. He used some of the expensive veneers to design his modernistic furniture, mirrors, chairs and so on. He was one French Art Deco modernist designer who used expensive and exotic woods with a combination of metal, glass, leather, parchment and mirrors.  

Some of the important works carried out by Jacques Adnet includes: redecoration of the study of French President at the chateau de Rambouille, apartment of Mme. Alice Corcea, the private apartments of President Vincent Auriol at the Elysee, many luxury ocean liners and Frank Jay Gould's house. Adnet became director of École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in 1970. Jacques Adnet met his end in 1984, but his legacy still remains fresh in the minds of art and furniture design lovers all over the world as well as in several popular museums all over the world.
