The history of Serge Mouille

 Serge Mouille was a renowned French industrial designer and goldsmith known for his iconic lighting designs. His fixtures are celebrated for their sculptural, modernist aesthetic, and have become enduring classics of mid-century design.

Mouille was born in Paris in 1922. From a young age, he showed a natural aptitude for design and metalwork. When he was just 13 years old, he started his training at the School of Applied Arts' silver workshop, where he studied under Gabriel Lacroix. By 1945, Mouille graduated as a goldsmith and shortly thereafter became a teacher at his former school.

During the early 1950s, interior designer Jacques Adnet, who was at that time the director of the Company of French Arts, commissioned Mouille to create a series of modern lighting fixtures. This marked a turning point in his career. His designs, while functional, were also highly sculptural, often evoking organic forms. One of his iconic designs is the "Mouille Mante Religieuse" (Praying Mantis) floor lamp, which was named for its resemblance to the insect.

His designs quickly became famous for their minimalistic style and elegant simplicity, with each piece crafted from metal and shaped into forms that suggested movement and dynamism. The "spider" lamps, with their multiple arms, and the "standing lamp with three arms" are some of his most popular designs.
